ABSTRACT

Background@#Inactivated vaccines are limited in preventing foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) due to safety problems. Recombinant virus-like particles (VLPs) are an excellent candidate for a novel vaccine for preventing FMD, given that VLPs have similar immunogenicity as natural viruses and are replication- and infection-incompetent. @*Objectives@#The 3C protease and P1 polyprotein of type O FMD virus (FDMV) was expressed in yeast Hansenula polymorpha to generate self-resembling VLPs, and the potential of recombinant VLPs as an FMD vaccine was evaluated. @*Methods@#BALB/c mice were immunized with recombinant purified VLPs using CpG oligodeoxynucleotide and aluminum hydroxide gel as an adjuvant. Cytokines and lymphocytes from serum and spleen were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, enzyme-linked immunospot assay, and flow cytometry. @*Results@#The VLPs of FMD were purified successfully from yeast protein with a diameter of approximately 25 nm. The immunization of mice showed that animals produced high levels of FMDV antibodies and a higher level of antibodies for a longer time. In addition, higher levels of interferon-γ and CD4 + T cells were observed in mice immunized with VLPs. @*Conclusions@#The expression of VLPs of FMD in H. polymorpha provides a novel strategy for the generation of the FMDV vaccine.

ABSTRACT

The prevention and treatment of COVID-19 in China is now at a key stage. The tasks faced by the medical organs are fighting against the COVID-19 while providing the medical services orderly. As a Specialist medical institution nationwide, ophthalmic hospitals are resuming receiving patients and performing operations gradually, including precision interruption of the epidemic, prevention of the secondary virus transmission, and avoidance of nosocomial cross infection among health care providers are required. We explored a multifaceted management for the prevention and control of epidemic, with a special focus on the individual protection for patients and medical staffs.A preliminary positive effect can be observed as a result. The main measures taken cover two aspects. On the one hand, 2019-nCoV ribonucleic acid (RNA) detection and hematological indices inspection including C-reactive protein (CRP) and serum amyloid A (SAA) are listed as routine tests of preoperative screening for ocular surgical patients. These tests are required to be completed upon the admission to avoid the possibility of accepting any asymptomatic infected individual and to reduce the risk of nosocomial cross infection. On the other hand, the 2019-nCoV RNA detection is also provided to high-risk employees who visited affected area recently. This assists in obtaining guarantee in both safety and quality of medical services provided, but also helps in lessening the mental and spiritual stress for medical staffs. It is expected that these measures can contribute to the work of our peers of ophthalmology in the prevention and control of COVID-19 and to the safe environment where the medical services are provided, and provide a reference for other outbreak of virus-causing disease.

ABSTRACT

Objective This study was to observe the meibomian gland scores, the miss rate of meibomian,break-up time of tear film (BUT) changes after long-term wearing orthokeratolog, and to evaluate orthokeratolog impact on meibomian gland function and the stability of the tear film. Methods A prospective case-controlled study was performed.Fifty patients 98 eyes with myopia were enrolled.According to the myopia correction mode, the patients were divided into control group (24 cases) and experimental group (overnight orthokeratolog treatment) group (26 cases). All subjects were underwent the examinations sequentially as follows:evaluation of ocular surface disease symptoms using the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI),lid margin and ocular surface examination by slit lamp microscrope, infrared meibomian photography and BUT.All measurements were repeated at 3 months,6 months,24-months follow-up visit. All patients signed informed consent before examination. Results After wearing orthok-contact lens for 24 months, the meibomian gland score was 4.54±1.10 and 2.29±0.75 in the experimental group and control group, respectively, the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05).The BUT was (6.35 ± 1.52) s 24 months after wearing orthokeratolog, which was less than (9.38 ± 1.88) s in the control group, the difference was statistically significant (P< 0.05).The miss rate of meibomian gland was 24.39 ± 5.54 and 22.81 ± 5.23 in the experimental group and control group, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference among the the miss rate of meibomian gland between groups and within groups (all at P>0.05).Conclusions Long-term wearing orthokeratolog has negetive effects on meibomian gland function and the stability of the tear film.

ABSTRACT

Objective To introduce an effective nursing practice for patients with Grave's ophthalmopathy(GO) undergoing endoscopic trans-ethmoid orbital decompression(ETOD). Methods The treatment and nursing experience of 31 cases (57 eyes) undergoing orbital decompression through endoscopic trans-ethmoid approach were reviewed and analyzed. Results Three months after operation, exophthalmos was corrected in all 31 cases (57 eyes) with satisfying result, and the visual acuity was improved in all 9 cases (16 eyes),who complained of visual loss preoperatively. At the 3-months' review, 2 patients presented diplopia on the primary eye position due to newly on-set global displacement. Conclusions Advanced treatment and careful nursing are very important to improve the surgical safety and decrease the complications.
